Occupational therapists use a variety of occupational therapy intervention techniques with meaningful and purposeful activities to help individuals of all ages achieve independence in daily life, fulfill vital roles, and achieve balanced participation in society. In their practice, occupational therapists conduct a detailed assessment of individuals' current skills in three key areas: person, environment, and occupation. They also assess individuals' current skills in their home, work, and social environments. They implement an individual-specific intervention program to maintain and develop these skills and increase independence and productivity.
Prioritizing the social participation and quality of life of both healthy clients and disadvantaged individuals, occupational therapists work in the public and private sectors in hospitals, special education and rehabilitation centers, wellness centers, alcohol and substance treatment centers, community mental health centers, homes for the elderly, daycare centers, home care services, palliative care, nursing homes, factories, schools, prisons, industrial work areas, and preventive, therapeutic, and rehabilitative health services.
