In the modern world, living conditions and ever-changing eating habits, as well as diversification of food products and changes in production conditions, have increased the importance of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics.

About the Department

Under these conditions, the need for this field, which has an indispensable importance within the health system, is increasing. One of the important factors in the emergence of chronic diseases, which are one of the most common health problems in all countries of the world today, is nutrition and lifestyle. Obesity is a health problem that takes the highest share of health expenditures in many countries, especially developed and developing countries, and also causes diseases such as hypertension, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. With the increase in obesity and the diseases it causes, the importance of the dietitian profession has also increased.

A dietitian is defined as a professional person who has received training in the field of nutrition and dietetics, provides services on food, nutrition and dietetics to individuals and societies at all stages of the life cycle, produces nutrition plans and policies, and provides training. International Confederation of Dietetic Associations (ICDA) dietitian; It defines it as "a person who has legally accepted qualifications in the field of nutrition and dietetics and practices nutrition and education of individuals and groups in health and disease, in the light of nutritional science."

What are the qualifications required by the program?

Our students who are interested in the Nutrition and Dietetics program must be successful in the YKS (AYT) numerical score type. In addition, our students are expected to be interested in the biology, chemistry, physiology, psychology and basic medical sciences required by the program. In terms of professional maturity and usefulness after graduation; Characteristics such as being respectful of nutritional culture and habits, knowing how to benefit from scientific data at the highest level, having advanced communication and persuasion skills, enjoying helping others, being disciplined and patient are important.

What opportunities does the program offer to its students?

Atlas University Department of Nutrition and Dietetics offers comprehensive education with its expert academic staff and multidisciplinary approach. It integrates experience with the theoretical education of our students with kitchen areas and laboratories designed for applied courses.

Under the umbrella of the Psychology department within our Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, we develop career preparation conditions with an integrative approach through nutritional psychology and nutritional therapy training.

We provide our students with the opportunity to carry out practice and internship opportunities at the highest level in our Faculty of Medicine and the hospitals and laboratories serving within it.

Food Chemistry, Heat-Light-Hydrotherapy, Transfer Activities, Nutrition Principles, Nutritional Anthropometry, Electro-physical Agents, Therapeutic Exercise, Developmental Diagnostic Evaluation, Food Chemistry, specially designed for our Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Basic Sciences Practice, Anatomy, Physiology laboratories and program. Our units such as laboratories offer the most modern infrastructure in terms of education and application to our students.

In addition, they can enrich their education by taking advantage of elective courses in coordination with other health sciences programs within our faculty, and if they are successful, they can find a Minor or Double Major opportunity in one of the other health sciences programs.

Education in all departments of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Istanbul Atlas University is provided with computer-aided education and training materials in order for our students to adopt the principle of lifelong learning, to update their knowledge and skills with continuous education, to follow technological developments regarding information interaction, communication and care in clinical environments and to reflect them on care. It also includes virtual reality. Virtual reality is a computer graphics technology that has become popular in recent years. This method is a highly computer-based interactive and multimedia technology that presents virtual objects and environments that imitate natural real environments. In virtual reality technology education, students can maximize their learning by interacting with the environments they live in. In addition, special importance is given to our students being equipped to use the developing technology of the age and the new professional methods and approaches that develop accordingly, and to develop their skills in using professional devices and technologies.

In which fields can graduates find employment opportunities?

Department of Nutrition and Dietetics; It is a branch of science that requires collaboration with many fields such as food, nutrition, biochemistry, physiology, management, behavioral sciences and social sciences. For this reason, the fields of study are quite comprehensive. Education, research and hospital dietitianship, executive dietitianship, public health dietitianship, food industry, special nutrition consultancy, sports clubs, fitness centers, athlete consultancy, enteral-parenteral nutrition and elderly home care services are some of the working areas of dietitians. Additionally, graduates can participate in academic life at universities by completing their master's and doctorate degrees.
