About the Program

Digital games have become one of the most multifaceted research objects of the century, with a wide range of impact extending from education and health to cultural heritage, artificial intelligence research, user experience, and social awareness studies. Situated at the intersection of technology, design, communication, and culture, this field brings together numerous disciplines—from game mechanics and narrative theory to visual aesthetics, human-machine interaction, sound design, and spatial design—on a single platform of production and thought. In line with this development, Game Studies is recognized in international academic circles as an independent and rapidly growing research field. Indeed, beyond being a product or entertainment tool, games are considered cultural systems that can be analyzed, interpreted, designed, and researched.

The Digital Game Design Master's Program with Thesis, within the Graduate Education Institute of Istanbul Atlas University,  The program views digital games not merely as technical objects of production, but as a form of cultural expression, a medium of communication, and a multifaceted field of research. It aims to provide students with a holistic perspective encompassing design, narrative, media, culture, user experience, and interaction technologies; and to bring together creative production processes and academic research under one roof. In this context, students from diverse disciplines, ranging from media studies and visual communication design to architecture, computer engineering, psychology, art, education, and health sciences, create a common research ground within the program. The acceptance of students from different academic backgrounds enriches research and production processes, and the convergence of different perspectives contributes to the development of more original research questions and the emergence of innovative solutions. The program's academic climate aims to cultivate researchers who can evaluate the multifaceted nature of digital games from diverse perspectives.

The program curriculum encompasses a broad range of research and application, from the theoretical foundations of games and design processes to narrative structures, player experience, AI-supported production processes, and cultural analysis. Theoretical courses, applied studies, and research processes are presented in a complementary structure. Compulsory courses enable students to grasp the fundamental theoretical frameworks of the field and develop research competence, while the elective pool allows students to specialize in their areas of interest. In this context, the program is structured on a holistic educational approach that combines academic research with creative production processes. Accordingly, the program aims to train students to become researchers who generate knowledge, think critically, and create their own research agendas. The thesis work, central to the program, is one of the most important stages of a student's academic development. Beyond being a graduation requirement, this process allows students to develop their own research agendas, develop original questions, evaluate and experiment with different methods and approaches, and transform their findings into scientific knowledge. In this way, students can develop not only their design and production skills but also become experts who can contribute to theoretical discussions in the field of digital games, develop an interdisciplinary perspective, and possess the competence to conduct academic research.
