The need for translators who will provide interlingual communication is increasing, so Translation and Interpreting departments that will train expert translators are gaining importance.

About the Department

Istanbul Atlas University Department of English Translation and Interpreting is designed to provide students who are equipped with 21st century skills, know how to access information, understand how to ensure self-improvement, are equipped with technology, comprehend and understand English and Turkish linguistically (phonology, lexicology, sentence science, semantics, pragmatics). It trains translators who have the ability to analyze, who can produce texts in both languages, who acquire text analysis skills in terms of translation, and who have an analytical command of both conceptual and theoretical knowledge in the field of translation.

Our students in the Department of English Translation and Interpreting learn a compulsory second foreign language at B2 level in addition to English. In addition to having the linguistic ability of English, Turkish and a second foreign language, they will have a command of the culture of all three languages ​​and the geography where the natural speakers of these languages ​​are located; They will realize that language is one of the most important elements of culture and will gain the skills to reflect this knowledge in text translation. In addition, our students are offered a third foreign language option for 4 semesters. In this way, our students become more competitive in the global workforce by expanding their ability to communicate in different languages. 

Our students will have the skills of both written and oral translation and will also acquire the ability to translate texts they will encounter in different fields of expertise (literature, technical, medicine, social sciences, economics, political science, psychology, etc.) in both types of translation (oral and written). They will receive oral translation lessons from expert translators who are actively involved in the simultaneous translation industry in our department's Simultaneous Interpreting Laboratory, equipped with the latest technology. They will graduate as translators who have acquired lifelong learning skills, knowing what conference interpreting is, how it is done and what types it is. They will have acquired the necessary equipment to acquire the translation skills to perform consecutive translation and/or community translation.

They will be effective and competent graduates who are aware of performing their profession as individuals with professional ethics, consciousness and responsibility, and who have taken part in at least one social responsibility project.

Our valued students who will graduate from the Department of Translation and Interpreting can work as staff or freelance translators in translation offices (in fields such as literature, technical, social sciences, medicine, economics) or interpreting (consecutive, simultaneous, in domestic and international conferences, in the field of remote translation) and in publishing houses. or they can work as editors. Our graduates; in media organizations (news, programs, scripts, advertisements, films, subtitles, consecutive translators), such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Ministry of National Education, the State Planning Organization, the Undersecretariat of Treasury and Foreign Trade, the Turkish Grand National Assembly and the Ministry of Justice. They can work as translators in official institutions and organizations, banks, press organizations, courts and other private institutions and organizations. In addition, he can work as a diplomatic translator (in foreign missions, European Union and Council of Europe representations); They can work as community translators within DISASTER and Medical Tourism.

If students are successful in the English Proficiency exam to be held at the beginning of the academic year, they can start the department without having to take a preparatory class.
