September 8th, World Physiotherapists Day, commemorates the founding of the World Confederation of Physiotherapy in 1951. Celebrated annually worldwide to raise awareness of the physiotherapy profession, this special day also provides an important opportunity to remember the importance of movement for health and independent living.
Physiotherapy; A Part of Lifelong Health
Associate Professor Dr. Hikmet Uçgun, Head of the Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Department at Atlas University Faculty of Health Sciences, emphasized that physiotherapy should not be considered merely a rehabilitation service sought after illness or injury today.
“Today, physiotherapy should be considered not only as a rehabilitation service sought after illness or injury, but also as a scientific health discipline that plays a lifelong role in maintaining and improving health and supporting healthy aging.”
Physiotherapists play an important role in protecting public health.
Associate Professor Dr. Hikmet Uçgun stated the following:
“The duties of physiotherapists are not limited solely to contributing to the treatment and rehabilitation of existing health problems. Preventive approaches are also among the important responsibilities of the profession.”
One of the most important responsibilities of physiotherapists is to contribute to the treatment and rehabilitation of existing health problems, as well as to develop preventive approaches aimed at preventing the development or progression of these problems.
Promoting physical activity, reducing the negative effects of sedentary lifestyles, preventing musculoskeletal problems, supporting healthy aging, and preserving functional capacity in chronic diseases are among the primary tasks.
Therefore, physiotherapists make a significant contribution to the creation of a healthier and more active society by supporting the mobility and independence of individuals.
Exercise is fundamental to a healthy life.
Associate Professor Dr. Hikmet Uçgun, who offered suggestions to individuals for protecting their health and improving their quality of life, emphasized that exercise is fundamental to a healthy life.
Associate Professor Dr. Hikmet Uçgun stated the following:
"Movement is fundamental to a healthy life."
Therefore, our most important recommendation is to make physical activity a natural and sustainable part of daily life. Avoiding prolonged inactivity, exercising regularly, maintaining muscle strength and endurance, and paying attention to sleep and nutrition habits are fundamental components of a healthy life.
Exercise should be tailored to the individual.
Uçgun also pointed out that exercise plans should not be the same for everyone, and recommended that individuals with chronic illnesses, pain, or limited mobility seek support from physiotherapists to create appropriate exercise programs.
Associate Professor Dr. Hikmet Uçgun stated that, rather than drastic changes, small but sustainable lifestyle modifications can lead to significant long-term gains in health and quality of life.
