The article on the research in which our Psychology Department Research Assistant Sevim EYÜPOĞLU participated has been published.

The article titled “Steroid Alteration in Cushing's Disease Persist After Remission: ACTH-Driven Steroid Changes Dissociate From Mood-Regulatory Neurosteroids,” in which Research Assistant Sevim EYÜPOĞLU from Atlas Psychology Laboratory was part of the research team, was published in Frontiers in Endocrinology, one of the prestigious journals in its field.

Cushing's syndrome is a disorder characterized by the body's prolonged production of excess cortisol hormone. This research involved patients diagnosed with Cushing's syndrome who were in remission after treatment, aiming to investigate at a biological level why psychological symptoms persist even after cortisol levels returned to normal with treatment.

Research has shown that even with treatment, Cushing's Syndrome leaves a lasting "hormonal memory" in the body. Even when patients' cortisol levels return completely to normal with treatment, the past excessive hormonal load leaves permanent genetic traces in the body's cells. This has paved the way for research into epigenetically targeted approaches and neurosteroid-based interventions as adjunctive treatments for the psychological morbidity associated with Cushing's disease.
