At the event titled “How to Run Your Own Business,” Özlem Yalçın shared her experiences regarding post-graduation career opportunities in the translation industry, as well as freelance translation and entrepreneurship processes. Giving examples from her own professional journey, Yalçın discussed the necessary skills for building a sustainable career in translation, the importance of specialization, and how to take advantage of opportunities in the sector.
The event also covered current dynamics in the translation industry, client relationship management, business development processes, and the importance of building a personal brand for freelance translators. Students had the opportunity to gain insights based on industry experience by directly asking questions about professional processes they might encounter after graduation.
One of the questions students were most curious about, "Will artificial intelligence take away the jobs of translators?", was also discussed at the event. Özlem Yalçın stated that artificial intelligence, when used correctly, is a supportive tool for translators rather than a threat, and emphasized that sustainability in the profession depends on using technology consciously.
The Translation Talks event series aims to help students evaluate the translation profession not only as a linguistic field but also in terms of entrepreneurship, professional development, and career planning. In line with this, the event increased students' awareness of post-graduation career options, enabling them to develop a more informed perspective on the sector.
