English Language and Literature Department

The most important feature of the Department of English Language and Literature at Atlas University is that it presents literature to students with a broad comparative and interdisciplinary perspective by associating it with contemporary thought and cultural movements.

About the Department

“This is the beauty of literature: You discover that all your longings are universal longings that everyone has, that you are not alone and you are not isolated.”
– Scott Fitzgerald

Spanning a wide cultural spectrum, the department's courses provide our students with a contemporary education that they can benefit from in every aspect of their lives, while also helping them understand individuals, societies and cultures.

In the first two years of their undergraduate program students take various courses on language and writing which train them in the areas of rhetoric, public speaking and report writing. Second Foreign Language (Spanish) courses also contribute to their appreciation of the contextual uses of another foreign language, and introduce them to a variety of discourses. In the last two years, a wide range of courses covering literary movements, genrés, trends, literary theory and criticism develop students’ competence in critical and analytical thinking, writing and addressing literary and other scholarly issues from an interdisciplinary as well as a global perspective. In other words, studying English Language and Literature at Atlas University provides an ideal introduction to the works and traditions that produce in us a sense of what it means to be a member of the human community. Throughout their studies, the students learn to recognize the relation between a literary text and its place in our contemporary world, and to develop a sense of the work as shaped by, and shaping the intellectual concerns and debates of their time.

Faculty and University elective courses included in our curriculum are courses that support the intellectual and professional equipment of our students. In addition, our students can also follow an education program in various specialties where they can receive a Double Major Diploma or Minor Certificate if they wish.

Our students from the Department of English Language and Literature can also participate in inter-university student exchange programs. Starting from the third year, our students who meet the conditions can gain overseas experience at universities within the scope of the ERASMUS Education Mobility Program.

Graduates of the Department of English Language and Literature work in educational institutions, universities, publishing houses, embassies and consulates, the tourism sector, media organizations, public relations and advertising agencies, or pursue an academic career.

Those motivated by the desire to understand literature in its broadest sense will find a welcome intellectual home in our department.
